Once you get the starter off the bike is it pretty straight forward to get
to the springs and take them out? In other words, any special tools or

No, Bob, it is pretty straight forward. My is a Marelli. But I seem to
remember the Bosch being the same.

Take off the two small nuts on the endcap, and you'll find the brush plate
under there. the brush plate is held on by one little nut, and the tight fit
into the starter body. If you gently tap the edge of the plate, you should
be able to pry it off the body.
