Spoke with Moe at Cycle Garden about this problem. He says it can be a
few things, but #1 on his list was advanced timing, #2 was bad
bushings/starter, #3 was to check if the bike can be jump started when
this problem occurs, I gather this would point to a bad battery.
Somehow, I think my starter may be the problem, though I did have some
pinging going on on the ride home from the shop which can point to
timing. But then again, I think the pinging might have been caused by
the 1/4 tank of 9 month old gas mixed in with the fresh stuff I had just
filled up with. Will continue to monitor the problem and look for other
posts which may solve this dilemma.

 Greg,

Yup Marelli on mine. I had it rebuilt not too long ago. The problem was
that
the starter would start but not stop...even when I disconnect the
starter
solenoid! Had to be shut off by pulling the main battery wire to the
starter
itself. I didn't like that.

I took it to a local guy and made sure I told him first that the starter
was
for a Fiat. Then when I brought it to him I told him it was for a
Loopframe.
He said that it was very similar and fixed it right up. No problems
since
other than the hanging up issue.

Good luck and let us know what you learn.....Ian

Ok I just pulled the starter and did a loadtest and with no load the
starter is pulling 52 Amps!!! which is well above the 25 it is spec'ed
to
pull. We all are talking about the Marelli starter? If I can find some
one around here who rebuilds them I'll take it in and report back if
they
found the problem.
