Exciting the solenoid is what I had to do on my VW Rabbit that had starting
problems like described. I simply took a generic solenoid and wired it to
fire the starter solenoid. Voila! No more starter problems. Since this is
not really aestheticly feasible on a bike, I'd just make sure that the
solenoid was working good to begin with.

What I am thinking is that the engine stops at near TDC where the compression is max. More work required to get it over the top but once it does there there is some inertia built up and the battery can handle the rotation through the next compression cycle. Another thought.....maybe the starter solenoid needs to be excited? I am no expert but sometimes when the engine stops rotating and I am still holding the starter button I can hear a little high pitched sound. I wonder what that is?
