Hi Bob,
1 1/2" to 2" will make it very difficult to assemble everything. I was going to have the sleeve protrude no more than 1" from the front plate. If a nice narrow stainless steel clamp can be found, 3/4" would be even better. Like I posted earlier, you probably wouldn't have to clamp at all.
Another idea might be to make a "stiffener" sleeve to fit inside the rubber boot, that would just make the boot hold it's shape during installation. Something as simple as a 1" wide band of stainless steel (so no rust could form) would work. A lot simpler - no flange or bead to form. Cheers,
Charlie

Charlie,
Ah ha, that's good. Putting a bead on the end of the extension would make it much stouter and would provide a seal on the rubber sleeve. My shop experience is coming back to me! I was thinking that this extension should protrude from the air box about 1 1/2 to 2 inches. What do you think? BOb

Hi Bob,
Tom's method is really simple - he's just sealing the boot in place on the front plate. I've done the same with Hylomar, that's the way it's on there now. Sure was a messy job when I was doing it though.
What I was going to do was visit my friend who does custom sheet metal fabrication and use his "rolls" to form a suitably robust sleeve with a flange that would fit inside the front plate and had a bead where the boot would slip on. You could also form the metal over a wooden pattern, though it would be more physical and a lot louder :-). A lot easier to do than describe. If I had a scanner, I'd draw up a crude illustration for you.
You wouldn't have to clamp the boot real tight to get an adequate seal, if the boot fit snug over sleeve you really wouldn't have to clamp at all. When I do the pre-season check-up on the old Ambo, I'll probably make a sleeve up.
Cheers,
Charlie

Charlie,
Tom Bowes wrote in and said something about gluing the rubber sleeve to the airbox. Got any idea what the hell he is talking about. I bet it works for Tom but I can't figure how he did it.
Anyway if you and I do the sheet metal thing there is one thing I think should be done and that is use extra thick sheet metal. When we go to cinch up the sleeve on the extension with the hose clamp even moderate tightening of the hose clamp could crush the sleeve and the extension. Those hose clamps are strong. Another idea is to crimp the edges of the extension just like on the female ends of stove pipe. This makes even thin sheet metal a bit more ridgid. Just some thoughts Charlie. One other thing Charlie, do you have any ideas, step-wise how we are going to put the whole thing together even if it does work? In other words how would we everything connected up, what would go together first and what last? Best, Bob

Hi Bob,
What you describe is exactly what I intend to do next time I have the airbox off. It should be relatively easy to do, depending on your sheet metal skill level. Go for it! Cheers,

Gentlemen,
Currently I have the traditional air cleaner system on my Ambo. , the round air filter, inside the metal air box, loosely connected to the rubber sleeve going to the carbs. The rubber thingy is connected with duct tape. Not a good situation. What I want to do is fix the weak spot in this system which is the loosely connected rubber sleeve to the metal air box. I want to make a metal collar that attaches to the inside of the metal air box and extends out and into the rubber sleeve so that I can put a large hose clamp around the rubber sleeve and cinch it down onto this new extension. Does this make sense? I'd rather not throw out the original air box and put on modern filters. Thanks, Bob
