Ted,
It's easier to remove it all together once you loosen the swing-arm and
pull it back out of the way. The battery tray has to come off also.

But I am now getting the idea that I am supposed to leave the bell housing connected and disconnect the transmission? from the drive shaft, which also means removing the battery tray? and the voltage regulator and the toolboxes? Is this correct or am I missing something? The motor has studs that come through the bellhouse mounts and the motor won't move far enough forward to get over the studs. I looked at the documentation in the chiltons manual on Greg's site, but I'm still unsure.
