I agree that a certain roughness is OK. Be sure you can thread them in
to the head smoothly making sure you do NOT cross thread. I wire brushed
the head threads very carefully to remove all the old carbon. When they
did break loose, I moved the header pipes up and down while squirting
penetrating oil untill I could move them with one hand easily. Then I
cut the pipe a few inches off the nut. New header pipes were about
$80.00 each I think.
