Gary Cheek made some great tools for this a while back...best I've ever used, contacted three of the slots..

My original exhaust nut removal tool was a chain ViceGrip. Instead of clamping jaws, this tool uses a chain to grip - great for getting a hold on any round object. You just have to be careful when placing the chain on the nut and not to scrape the head since the chain is wider than than the nut.
Now I use Harbor Freights' spanner that comes in a set of 3.
