OK, I'm no engineer, but if the whole thing is expanding, the metal is pushing against itself so the hole can't shrink. The integrity (if that is the right word) of the metal would force it away from itself. Otherwise something would have to give, which is why many materials break when overheated.

I guess when I tightened mine hot I was thinking that the exhaust port was a
larger size than normal,


I guess this is what I was really asking.

As the aluminum of the head "grows" with heat, doen't it expand in
all directions, which would mean the circumference (inside) of the
port would actually shrink?

Where's a mechanical engineer when you need one?
