Hello Rich,
It sounds like your cylinders are just fine. If the pistons are in as good of
shape you'll be good to go! I have two sets of cylinders that have bubbled chrome
at the top of piston travel. It would only be a matter of time before the chrome
started peeling on the rest of the cylinder, so I'm having sleeves installed when
I get that far. I'd probably go Nikasil, but both sets of pistons are perfect @
approx. 50k miles.
Todd, I paid $2000 in '96 for my '69 Ambo and two boxes of engine, tranny and
chassis parts. I feel that I got a good deal. The Ambo had 36k miles on it, ran
very well (even though it had only been ridden 3k miles in 13 years) and was
advertised as needing cosmetic restoration. Well, as I like to say it's not so
pretty I'm afraid to ride it and not so ugly I'm ashamed of it. I knew the owner
for quite some time, and had always lusted after the Ambo, so I didn't hesitate
when it became available. I've never regretted buying it! I paid approx. $1000
for each of my project (basket case) bikes. $2200 doesn't sound unreasonable for
the Eldo, but of course it would be nice to hear it run. I agree with other posts
- I don't think you can go wrong on this deal. Personally, I'd never part out a
Loopframe no matter how bad, but realize this is a necessary evil in order to
keep reasonably priced parts available.
Just my two cents worth,
Charlie

Cooked dinner for my wife and daughter and since I was such a good cook :-) I got to go to the garage for a couple of hours. So I pulled both the intake and exhaust manifolds, the oil line, rockers, head bolts, and pulled the heads and cylinders off the left side. So I find no wear on the rockers or pins, the heads have minimum carbon buildup, the pistons are only a little crusty on top (already scraped clean) and the cylinders look as nice as the Nikasil ones on my Cagiva. This is to say I can see no flaking, pitting or feel any ridges from wear. Sure the bore where the rings don't make contact are a bit duller than the rest but my fingernail can detect no ridge. And all of the O-rings fell apart as soon as I touched them (already covered as I acquired all of the gaskets and such before starting). This is on a '71 Ambo with 46K, that the second owner (who owned it 17 years) reported only having the pushrods replaced due to one breaking, on the top end. So someone in the know of the vastly reported problem with the chrome bore flaking and/or wearing out please enlighten me or give me the signs I should be looking for. How many miles do ones with good care and don't sit a long time go? She does not smoke except for when the choke is on and compression test runs about 160 psi with my 20 year old gauge. I feel like a happy camper but don't want to get too optimistic. Now if I only felt this good about the clutch but will report on that when I get the time to pull the tranny. Any first hand knowledge, reports, wisdom, BS or encouragement will be appreciated. Rich --- Sponsor's Message -------------------------------------- Wanna Gorge Yourself on Food?
