Todd,

I'll throw in my 2 cents. I bought my 71 last May. I never saw a loopframe
except through pictures.
I admit emotion outweighed the way I normally would have liked to buy one,
but it seemed like I wouldn't find one locally unless I was willing to wait
indefinitely, so I took some risks.
It was advertised as original with 5K miles, and in running condition.
$2100 asking price.
The bike was in Fayetteville NC and I am in Harrisburg PA.
I had done some research over 2 months and this did seem to be a decent
price.

After exchanging emails and phone calls and seeing the bike in jpeg file, I
decided to take the plunge.
Hanging a Uhaul trailer to the back of my old Benz, I headed down I95.

Bike started, no smoke, ran well in the sellers development. All 4 gears
were there. clutch action good.
Bike looked better in the pictures than up close. The only decent chrome
was on the tank. All the rest was pitted badly or painted silver. Seat
was patched with black electrical tape. Pretty bald Pirellis were mounted.
Black paint and white striping faded. Minor rust in the Battery tray.

We settled on $2050, and I have # 21205 in my garage now.

I figured if I paid too a little too much, well that was the cost of being
new to the loopframe world, a kind of price of admission.

I did notice at least 6 people pass me on the road, blow their horn and give
a thumbs up on the way home. I was kind of surprised.

From what I have seen on mine, sitting in Florida for an unknown period has
really advanced corrosion. terminals and the battery cables were pretty
corroded. Grease was very dry in the head bearings and back in the cogs in
the rear wheel that mate to the drive.
After synchronizing the carbs as well as I could and new plugs and wires, it
idles very smoothly.

As far as the cylinder chrome goes, Ian said it well about the pitting and
peeling, so I wont repeat that, but from the electroplating I have been
exposed to, its a batch process, where a small group are processed
separately. This leaves open the door for inconsistency, depending how long
the parts are left in each bath, how depleted the solution is etc.
So its hard to predict, but I guess its not something that will suddenly
leave you stranded but can be a costly repair.

Good Luck.

Richard......I have been having the same thoughts.
Next week I pick up an Eldorado (1973, 2nd owner)
that has basically sat for 10 years. Present owner
said he did run it every summer, but only 50 miles or
so a year. It looks rough, but appears it will clean up
and be a good runner. He is throwing in a California GT
buddy seat(good shape) and solo seat(fair shape).
I agreed to give him $2200 (Eldo is missing side covers,
grab rails and front fender stay). Cash has not exchanged
hands, but am planning on finalizing in a week.
I realize it is near impossible to determine if this is
a fair deal without seeing the Eldo, but any comments
would be helpful. Frank S. (NY) has been a great help,
as has Maynard (WI). What do you hardcore Loopers
think? Any comments would be appreciated.

Todd
