Well, I took all of the shift linkage apart and cleaned and regreased
all of the moving surfaces. I also took the small back plate off of the
transmission to confirm that the shift return spring had not broken (it
is just fine). Also, I couldn't readily see where the shift gears had
come into contact with the transmission case, so I'm doubtful that that
is the problem.
I've thought about playing with the shift spring adjustment screw on the
small back plate. The purpose of which is to 'center' the gear selector
so that it is half-way between going up and going down (wherever that
may be with a particular transmission). But, since I experience trouble
both upshifting and downshifting, I have my doubts that this would solve
anything.
Further investigation has revealed that when things get hung up, that
the shift lever can still freely move. Also, I think that I'm having
more trouble when shifting between 2nd and 3rd gears than any other
combination (although 2nd to 1st is problematic, too). This leaves me
contemplating the gear selector forks inside the transmission. I
remember when I had the transmission apart that mine showed some wear,
but I decided to run them a while longer. Perhaps I've run them long
enough?!?
On a re-engineering note, I've thought about installing two shift-return
springs (if they'll fit). This would definitely require a firmer foot
movement to change gears, but would certainly get at least the shifter
back to center. I don't think I will go this route as I'm leaning
heavily toward replacing the gear selector forks.
