Hi John,
I'm thinking (hoping) that it is just dirt or grit preventing the lever
from returning. So, I will certainly clean up everything before
reassembly.
BUT, I do remember when we were putting things back together last winter
that moving the shift lever in one direction actually caused just a wee
bit of contact between the gears on the shift lever and the case. Do you
recall that, too? Perhaps there has been sufficient wear in the housing
to allow just enough free play to cause things to bind up. I'll take
some time tonight looking at things closely before reassembly.
If it is binding, I'm not sure what the best solution is. A quick and
dirty approach might be to file a little off of the shift lever gears so
that it no longer binds on the case. Any thoughts?
Don't worry, John. I blame all of life's troubles and woes on you, not
just Guzzi transmission stuff :>
Seriously, though. Are you still getting some riding in up there? Or
have the pre-salted the roads already in anticipation of the coming
winter?
