Bruce,
It sounds like you have a warped intermediate plate. I removed my=
transmission
from my Ambassador, and changed the plate.
But it is hard to line up the clutch plates when the engine is in the frame.=
=20
If the engine is out of the frame, just lay it down on
the fan belt side, all the clutch parts can be put in place, use a spare
hub to
line the up, and they won't slip around, tighten the bolts and then stand=
the
engine up. Take spare hub out and install transmission, and then put the
engine back. If you do the job without taking the engine out of the frame,=
you
scratch up the paint on the frame while lining up the parts, and you have to
remove most of the cables
anyway so the engine can be maneuvered about. So by the time you are done
with
it, you could have pulled the engine.

didn't upgrade to the deeper hub (stupid me!); the old hub looked good

To ask the obvious, isn't it true I have to remove the engine and
tranny to do a clutch R&R rather than just the tranny?
