Peter,
I'm new to this list but not to Guzzi. I bought my first one in 74
(LAPD new) and currently own 3. Your statement about 4 miles till otta
gas tells me somthing is wrong here.
On my 74 I use the left shut off for normal and the right for reserve.
The left (normal) has a taller pick up tube. the right (reserve) has a
very short one.
When I run out I turn the right lever and get about 1 gallon.
Some things to check:
I believe that the part numbers for the left and right fuel cocks are
different. try buying a new left (reserve) one... or try eBay.
Make sure you have both fuel cocks going to an X and then to the carbs.
Try turning off your left fuel cock and remove the hose from the right
(what a pain that can be!). Then turn on the valve and see if enough gas
runs out to burn the garage down. It should flow as nice and even as can
be. If no... bad valve.
You should get about 45 to 55 miles on the reserve. If you get just 4
that tells me either there was NOTHING in yer tank and you ran the fuel
out of the lines etc... or yer left valve is a reserve one...
I think some of the valves had RESERVE stamped on 'em.
Lemme know how this works out. Sounds like it's fixable.
Ciao
