If it's not getting a charge I'd suspect 1) aBad connection somewhwere
2) bad voltage regulator 3) bad brushes on the generator or 4) incorrect
hookup (hard to do, but can be done). My eldo would not start good, so a
local dealer put a new starter on at a cost of $450 or so (damn I'm glad
P.O. did this). When I got it, it still had starting problems. Turns out,
the voltage regulator was bad. $25.00 later, I haven't had a problem in 3
years now.
Sorry, but I don't know any quick test without removing the generator.
That's what I did, and it tested good once I found someone who knew how to
test it. Don't bother with PepBoys/Advance/Auto Zone...buncha dumbasses
IMHO.

At 6:30 PM the Ambassador fired up for the first time in god knows how many years and after 8 months of my working on it. I was giddy. Bouncing off the walls. I kept firing it up and giggling. I did go and exchange the 140 cca battery for a 275. The biggest they had. The second coat of green is on the tank. All that's left is some cleaning up. and a license plate. and some tires. and the charging system doesn't work. I think that is due to too much resistance in the ground wire. Where does that usuallu attac on the frame of the bike? ALso, if anyone has a quick, in the bike, with the cover on test to run on the generator, let me know.
