Heat kills 'em. I wasted a me99 on a 3k ride...normally I;d get double that. But the hot california sun and running hard down the highway wore it away in no time.
improper inflation generates more heat...but you knew that
On a less agressive riding style bike (like my t-3 cop bike) I use a dual compound. Cause I know I'm gonn highway it for most of the miles I get one that has the durability in the center and better grip on the sides. It used to be that the side compound was still hard enough that it didn't make for a great backroad racer tire.
That seems to be changing. I just got a pirelli dual compound for my VTR that rips hard.

Please...please someone teach me how to get more miles out of my tires. I'm lucky to squeeze 6k out of the front & 5k on the rear.
The last time I bought a front the 100 Roadrunner was not available. I ended up buying an Avon "Venom X" in the 100/90/18, so far so good. I have been told that the Roadrunner 100 is coming back.
For what its worth, I'm running a 90/90/18 on the front of my loopframe race bike & it works quite well.
