Peter,
The reason everyone suggests going to either the KN's or the Uni's is that
the old airbox didn't breath very well. Also the replacement pieces were
very expensive. I think the boot alone is as much as the KN filters. The
UNI's are very nicely priced at $11 a side. I think also that the UNI's can
go inside the old airbox so you can keep the look. of the old airbox,
something that is worthwhile with the old side covers.
The way I figure it...if your plugs are tan, the bike starts right away,
idles ok once warm, has good power range, doesn't pop at high rpm then you
have a good set up.

Ian, When I got my 71, I noticed the boot connecting the airbox to carbs was torn. MG Cycle suggested the K&Ns. I mounted them on the carbs directly. I vaguely remembered the threaded inserts. After reading the recent exchanges, I checked the box where I stored all the related bits, I saw the velocity stacks mentioned. For what its worth, the K&N mounted to the carb seems to work OK. Its a close fit and I need a hoseclamp to keep them attached because the mounting surface is maybe 3/4 inch long. Performance wise, I dont have anything else to compare to at this time, but I'll keep this in mind to try an experiment in the future. Pete |
