Don't dare remove the intake throats. The smooth inner bore is very
important to proper air flow. I did what you suggest for several years with
really poor performance. The intake throats had been lost in a rebuild.
Eventually, BJ Schwartz gave me two intake throats with the airbox lips taken
off by a lathe. The K&N filters fit right over. WOW, what a better way to
run and engine and to ilncrease fuel mileage with more power. If you're
doing a permanent loss of the stock air box, cut the lips off the air horns.
