Ted,
The wire that goes from that bolt to the coil, is it tight on distrubutor side AND at the coil? I had the same problem before where it would idle fine and as soon as you go for a ride it would start spitting and sputtering. Turned out the wire on the coil side was loose. Once you remove the points, you can remove the bolt.

But I bought new jets from the local guzzi dealer and the bike ran fine for the first 20 miles or so I rode it, this problem kind of came on all at once. I'll recheck the jets to make sure they are clear, but I have a newly POR-15'd tank and a fuel filter so I'm not too hopeful. At one point it wasn't getting spark and I think it was related to the bolt on the distributor where the condensor and coil wires attach. That thing looks pretty mungy, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove it. Even if I dremel'd off the rusty bolt holding it in, it doesn't look like I could get it out because the points assembly and distibutor cam are in the way. Is this as difficult as it looks? Also, the plastic thing that keeps the bolt from contacting ground is really chewed up and I didn't see another of those at MG Cycle anyone know if they are available? Thanks again Ian. For example...let's say a mouse made a nest in one of the pipes....that problem would show up under any condition. You can install the dist eaily enough. Guzziology has a good description of how to do it but you basically have to make sure the left hand cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke and then insert the dist shaft so that the cam lobe is just at the point of opening the points. Remember that you have to be on the right cam lobe as there are two of them. I think the contact on rotor should point at 6 o'clock...downwards? Also...be sure that the dist adjusting bolt is in the middle of the adjustment range. You know.....I am thinking that if the bike starts to misfire at high rpms....you sure you have the right jets in there? I remember somebody once had all kinds of problems...turns out the PO had installed the wrong jets in it. Either that or they are blocked. ...Ian
