Ted, I wish I had your bike in my garage....we would figure it out :-) So
tough to sort out without touching it.

I think the distributor system on the bikes is a two "stage" or "spring"
advance. You have two springs of different "stretch" that will act as the
distributor spins faster. It is normal to have one loose when engine not
spinning. Besides...if something was wrong with the advance I think you
would see it when the bike was running cold as well. Now...since you have
the distributor "out" you might as well have a look at the gear at the end.
Is it ok? Any excessive play in the distributor shaft? Now put the assembly
back...hopefully the same way it came out :-) and go back to the carb...

What I like to do is to RTV a manifold gasket to both the carb manifold and
the cylinder head. This way you get a good seal between the two components
while still being able to separate the carb from the cylinder head when
doing work. I never pull the carb from the manifold as it is such a PITA to
get them on and off.

By the way.....after the bike runs and is fully warm....any black smoke
coming out the back? What happens at idle....as you accelerate the engine?
What happens at constant high engine rpm?

My bike runs great when first started, UNTIL it warms up. I took the
distributor out yesterday and the springs are VERY loose. As a matter of
fact, one spring doesn't even make contact until the advance is almost
completely open.
I also noticed my right carb is missing the bolt to that clamps the carb
to the manifold. It's pretty tight anyway, but I suppose that is a
possiblity too.
