John,
I can relate to the "lucky" brake failure. I had a 66 Pontiac Bonneville
convertible do the same thing. Drove it all day long, whipped into the
driveway and lurched to a stop right at the garage door. Thought it felt
funny so I touched the brake again before I cut off the engine only to have
the pedal drop to the floor! Those good old single system brakes had blown
out a hose. Imagine 5500 lbs with no brakes. I think I could have stopped
it on pucker factor alone if need be.
Guzzi content? Oh, yeah! If'n you beat the bearing out best to chuck it.
The percussion will no doubt leave the balls less than round and the races
less than smooth. I always ditch the thing as it can do nasty things to the
expensive bits if it croaks!

Oh...and carrier bearing came out just fine; a little more heat gun treatment and a bit of spirited pounding with a drift and it popped right out. Seems to be none the worse for the wear, either. John Prusnek |
