the thread has mutated a bit, but I wanted to add....

If you had some tools with you and a healthy battery, you could have
disconnected the charging system (b+ to battery and drve belt from
generator) and probably gotten home if it wasn't too far, or atleast to
somewhere safer. These things will go a long ways on just the batt if they
only have to fire the coil. Granted it wouldn't be safe to ride in heavy
traffic or a free way without the headlight or at night. But you could have
probably gotten to a all night gas station or something where the night dude
will take a 10 spot to keep an eye on it. when I worked grave in a gas
station a few years ago, I had a chong on an old crusty panhead leave the
bike overnight. I just left a note for the day crew that it was MY bike and
to not mess with it.

I loved my previous owner.....other than trying to run the bike with the
carbs full of rust and letting all the chrome rust he pretty much left the
thing along. This allowed me to basically start with a totally original
Loop. I prefer this to trying to work on something that has been "modified"

I found the source of all my electrical problems. Unfortunately it
affected almost all aspects of the charging system. The previous owner
only attached the battery with one J bolt, which allowed it to move and
come in contact with the hold down bracket. It appears that the
regulator
worked as a very large fuse but only after the generator had its
windings
melted. Hopefully the parts will be acquired or repaired before next
weekend's North California breakfast.
