Truth is stranger than fiction. AMAL's are fine carbs, a very simple and
functional design, and capable of many, many modification to suit many
many applications. Their biggest fault was their slides, that were fine
for about 10K mi and then wore out.

Mikuni produced their found slide carbs under lisence from Amal. Like a
lot of the early Japanese stuff, they did a very nice copy, Japanese carb
manauls of the early sixties called then Amals, even though they were made
by Mikuni. Like a lot of the Japanese manufacturers of the 60's they
spent the extra dime (probably literally) to fix the slide problem--It
involves merely changing the alloy.

As time went on, Mikuni also would have some problems, motorcycle
manufacturers would ask for a certain design, and Mikuni would give then
the carb, which, frequently would not work as advertised, to which Mikuni
would reply--make it work.

For those of us with Amals--there is a fix for the slide problem. Send
'em off and have 'em sleeved.

I sure like the Del Ortos tho'. I also like CV carbs which are altitude
compensating. Has anyone put these on a loopframe???
