Good point. But as long as there is room to rotate the distributor shouldn't
that cure the problem? The only reason I see to move the distributor a notch
would be because you have run out of adjustment room.
Does this make sense?
Good idea though to start playing with the timing. Dam the light. Mark the
distributor and rotate it a bit one way and see how the bike reacts. Then go
the other way. Maybe that will help find the good range.
What about the taper needles setting? I think that it needs to be set at the
second notch. Could having it on the wrong notch cause it to run lean?

Richard, By any chance has somebody been into the engine on your bike? It almost sounds like the valve timing, not the ignition timing is off. I haven't been into one of these engines to know the nuances of setting up the timing gears, but if they are a tooth or two off it would be a plausible explanation as to why everything else you have tried has been unsuccessful.
