Hi Jason and Charlie and all other loopers...
I like the phpBB bulletin boards. They are easy to navigate, maintain,
have an easily searchable history, and in my experience don't suffer the
problems others have had with Topica. There are a couple of ways to
implement the phpBB:
1. Go the free way like is done on Guzzitech, etc. This is good because
the board doesn't reside on someone's personal server and isn't "owned"
by any one particular looper. However, it does have the downside of not
being the most troublefree of the installs. It seems like every time the
free phpBB are updated, they are down for days or even weeks.
2. Go with a phpBB that resides on someone's server. For instance, my
web hosting service allows me to run a phpBB server from my website.
These are usually much more troublefree and not prone to updates at the
whim of the free site. However, this would mean that the website is
"owned" by whomever owns the domain name/web hosting account.
I am willing to do this with my web hosting service, but I don't know
that I'm the best candidate. I don't want to be seen as attempting to
monopolize or control the entire online loop world - this is especially
true when it comes to a news group that must remain 'open' to all loop
content while eliminating all of the unwanted spam. If everyone else
wants me to do this, then I will and I'll be happy to do so. One more
thing...it is certainly possible for Charlie to remain the site
administrator, regardless of who hosts the phpBB. He has my vote if he
wants the job :>
The downside to any new list is that it will be very difficult to
migrate the existing content to the new list. It would most likely take
a tremendous amount of effort to do so and I doubt that it would ever
happen.
In the end, if a move is made, I would like it to be a move and not the
start of an additional list. I've already got enough news groups to read
and splitting loop news group into two versions would not be a good
thing, in my opinion.

I'd actually like to see the loopframe list migrate. Topica is ok, but not a great list serve- it's difficult to archive and search past listings, and there is no threading of discussions that I've seen. Now that I've bitched, I don't have any good off-hand suggestions except to say that I'll write Guzziguy Todd Eagan (RacerX) who has started several message boards. Maybe he'll have some good ideas. I know Todd uses phpbbforfree.com, but it seems to be off-line at the moment. Jason |
