You need a new ignition switch. The old get"loose" inside. I had a similar problem on a few bikes. The switches are 30 yrs old.
I got mine from MG Cycle

Haven't delved in yet, but want to get any ideas. One, my tachometer has suddenly started working only sporadically. Sometimes it will work just fine and then I look down and its stuck at, oh... say 3000 rpm, or wherever it was when it stopped working. Even if I turn off the bike and tap on it, the needle doesn't move. Is my tacho toasted? The other is something that will probably just take a lot of time and effort. Sometimes the bike just quits. No spark. it just suddenly dies. I have had luck opening the headlight and just fiddling around, maybe a short, but I still have power to the starter and lights and all. Anyway, give me any good suggestions you have and I'll store them away for the troubleshooting adventure that lies ahead.
