When I'm standing on the off-side of the bike looking at the distributor/timer, do I turn it clockwise or anti-clockwise to advance the ignition? I've got a prime example of a very slow-turning Eldo out
The rotor within the distributor turns clockwise. So, if you rotate the body of the distributor couterclockwise you will advance it. Clockwise (same direction as the rotor) would retard it.
