Hi Don,
It shouldn't be the voltage regulator...as that's really just a direct
connection to the positive terminal on the battery. Instead, I would
check the wiring and connectors, including the ground. Also,
check/replace the relay to be sure it's operating properly.
If all else fails, drain the straight 140 weight engine oil and replace
with 20W/50. ;>
