Actually, I did check it, from several sources, including Greg's and they don't show anything between the worm drive and that output shaft nut. Maybe I have the ball in the wrong place - I have it "on top" of the worm drive (looking down with the tranny on its nose) - is that right?

Tom,
Going from memory (not to good at the moment) I believe there is a thick washer/spacer of sorts that goes on top of the drive gear. The seal surrounds it and then the star washer and nut combo go on top of that. Did you check you parts book? If you don't have one check on Greg Benders website for the download version.

Thanks for the confirm, Paul. I did in fact order an additional 27mm nut so I'm good to go there. Any thoughts on the output shaft nut issue - is there a washer there or not?
Thanks, -tom

| Yes you can use the same nut. It's available from MG Cycle. I did this on my 74 and it works great. I also got a new star washer |
for
| at the same time.

| While putting tranny back together ('74 Eldo) I notice that the output shaft nut (at the rear) seems to ride directly on top of the speedo worm ball - is this |
really
| normal - or should there be some kind of washer |
between
| the nut and speedo worm? There wasn't one when I disassembled it, but based on what else I've found missing from the PO - I don't trust that.
Also, w/o that "special" tool, I ground pegs on a |
socket
| to use for putting the input hub nut on - I'm |
skeptical
| I'm getting it tight enough. Can I use the same nut |
that
| you use on the output shaft (27mm) - does it have |
enough
| bearing surface? I'd really like to be able to put |
some
| firmer torque on that input hub.
Thanks, -tom
