Hi Tom,
I just got done working on an 850T Transmission, and here is how it works on it (I've never opened an Eldo 5 speed - and they are a bit different from the T):
1. The worm drive goes in...I believe a washer goes in just before this...but definitely not after. 2. The ball goes in. 3. The nut goes on.
On the T, there is one notch in the output shaft that is deeper than all the others...that is the notch in which the ball needs to be set. Any other notch and the ball will remain too high and the nut will run into it.
Hope this helps!

| Thanks for the confirm, Paul. I did in fact order an additional 27mm nut so I'm good to go there. Any thoughts on the output shaft nut issue - is there a washer there or not?
Thanks, -tom

| Yes you can use the same nut. It's available from MG Cycle. I did this on my 74 and it works great. I also got a new star washer |

| While putting tranny back together ('74 Eldo) I notice that the output shaft nut (at the rear) seems to ride directly on top of the speedo worm ball - is this |
really
| normal - or should there be some kind of washer |
between
| the nut and speedo worm? There wasn't one when I disassembled it, but based on what else I've found missing from the PO - I don't trust that.
Also, w/o that "special" tool, I ground pegs on a |
socket
| to use for putting the input hub nut on - I'm |
skeptical
| I'm getting it tight enough. Can I use the same nut |
that
| you use on the output shaft (27mm) - does it have |
enough
| bearing surface? I'd really like to be able to put |
some
| firmer torque on that input hub.
Thanks, -tom
