Hi Cam,
Easy Out is a general term applied to any one of the many bolt removers
that look sort of like a drill bit, but with a more shallow reverse
twist. Believe there actually is one brand by that trade name also. I'd
like to give the set of bolt removers from Craftsman a try - sort of a
short left-handed drill bit and bolt remover all in one. Glad I haven't
had to use them though (yet).
How not to remove a broken off top crashbar bolt (or how the PO of my
'72 did it):
1. grind bolt flush with stub it screws into
2. drill hole off center
3. break easy out off in hole, let sharp piece stick out.
4. give up and run without crashbars
Because of this failed attempt, I ended up cutting the stub off of the
frame, making a new one and welding it in place. Never tell it isn't
original now and it probably took less time than messing around trying
to chip away the easy out, drill, tap, etc. Only part of the mess I've
dealt with on this project!

Thanks for all the input. Mark, what's an "easy out"? Remember, it's amature hour in my garage. Cam in NJ '74 Eldo Police |
