Hi Jason:
I've ridden two loops for many miles and both front ends banged. The noise
is the fork leg bearing hitting the fork tube retainer when it reaches its
maximum extention. I tried installing O rings on top of the turbe retainer
as a shock absorber, but they disintergrated in short order. It sounds like
a heavy viscosity oil is the fix. If your forks aren't sloppy I wouldn't
mess with taking them apart, my opinion.
You don't need a tool to disassemble the forks. I believe that the tool you
are talking about is used to pull the collapsed fork tube up through the
triple trees so it can be tightened in place. I used to use a piece of a
large dowel that I could drop through the tripple trees and thread into the
top of the fork tube. Last year I upgraded and made a tool from a spare
fork cap and large bolt.
You will need a tool to remove the chrome seal retainer on top of the fork
leg. This too can be made. A 6 inch lenght of 1 1/4 pipe, a hack saw and a
file is all you need. You have to produce four protrusions on the end of
the pipe that will fit into the four slots on the inside of the seal
retainer. Trying to grab this thing from the outside is difficult at best
and is a good way to wreck the chrome.

for a syringe, try a vet. Particularly a 'large animal' veterinary.
Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me, but good luck.
Thanks for the responses on the front end knock. I know I have oil in
there, I know the fender isn't hitting anything. It's something
internal. Guess I'll end up taking it apart to look. Anyone have the
fork tube puller tool from MGCycle? Are the threads steel or aluminum?
For $28, it seems cheaper than making one.
Cheers,
Jason
