the atf pump appears to be fine, it's pumping/sucking fluid all over.
if it didn't work, i would have no forward motion and very hot atf
fluid. neither of which is the case. unless the suction hose is
collapsing, but then i would still get very hot atf fluid. so i think
the pump is fine.
i have an extra trans and clutch assembly, of which i have examined
relatively thoroughly. i have the shop manual and guzziology handy.
the clutch and trans are in 2 separate housings. the convert is a dry
clutch. guzziology states there should be a small drain hole in bottom
of clutch housing, but also states, if there isn't one, drill a hole.
there are 2 sets of plates in the clutch, half engage the basket, the
other half engage the clutch input shaft.so if the plates were wet, it
could slip. i think i'm gonna go drill a hole, see if fluid leaks out,
then clean whole thing with mineral spirits and find out. perhaps
it'll fix it, if not, it was worth a shot.

perhaps this set the record straight. or maybe not - can anyone verify
that everything i stated was correct?
Now, I don't have a Convert trans apart, or a shop manual, or Guzziology
immediately handy. So what I am going to say is based on what I think I
remember reading. VERY dangerous! Someone who knows better please feel
free to correct me.
I think the Convert clutch is a wet clutch, and is housed in the
transmission. It is a conventional (for most motorcycles anyway)
multiplate clutch. I believe that I read that the plates are the same as
a Stornello 125's, hence my comment about it being wimpy. I would imagine
though that there are a few more plates to allow it to handle the
prodigious torque of the round barrel 1000. I would definitely see that
it is adjusted properly, paying close attention to the free play. Because
of the torque converter, the clutch doesn't normally see a lot of shock.
I have noticed mine slip before. In the process of learning how to ride
the 'Vert, I sometimes pulled in the clutch at a stop sign and blipped
the throttle. When I pulled away, I released the clutch and twisted the
throttle like you would with a manual tranny. This usually produced
clutch slippageand very slow acceleration. If I backed off on the
throttle and let the clutch hook up, I could dial it back on with no more
slippage evident. Of course the best method is to leave the clutch lever
alone.

even if the clutch plates were completely soaked, they
would still transmit power..there is NO SLIPPING in
this clutch arrangement...I've been told it's like a
moto cross clutch...the basket has fingers holding the
slots on the friction plates...nothing slides against
each other in this system...when you pull the clutch
lever it seperates the plates from each other,
stopping drive to the rear, but the plates themselves
don't "slide" against each other like a conventional
big twin clutch...I've got one apart in my garage
right now...
I think I'd look more toward the ATF pump in the front
cover losing the ability to draw from the reservoir on
the left side...the ATF pump runs off a pin straight
off the cam...if the pump housing becomes fatigued,
the shaft begins to round out the shaft housing hole,
then it refuses to draw from the left side
reserve...if you had it all apart in your hands you
probably would go "Aha!"....
but again, make sure the clutch lever arm on the back
of the tranny has slack...too tight and you'll be not
delivering power to rear wheel also..
good hunting to you...

no, i regularly switch from high to low..(well not
that often, but you
can definitely tell the difference..) i'm thinking
massive clutch
slippage, perhaps front clutch seal is blown and
clutch plates are
soaked.... but i keep thinking torque convertor,
because it feels like
when a torque convertor fails on a car.....
