Okay....I've been riding my Norton Commando for a few years over to Mid-Ohio
vintage days and happen to run into a bunch of guys from St. Louis, including
one Joe Jump. Two years ago Joe rode over on a police Eldo and the bike kinda
made me grin. I remembered these odd beasts from cycle mags etc. in the 70's
(got my first bike at age 11 in 1968). Anyway, I was rather impressed at
watching this floorboarded, full fairinged, saddlebagged creation going through
country road turns with Joey at the helm. No, not as fast as my Norton......but
hmm...something about this beast I find intriguing. After watching vintage
racing that day Joe mentions that he wants to go have a few cold ones with the
"Loopers" and asks if I want to go...OK sure, but what the hell is a Looper?? We
ride through the infield up to a group of several guys all on beautiful old
Guzzi's where I meet Kevin Graf and probably a couple other guys on this
list..."Loopers" is explained to me. Staring at these bikes stirs a comment that my
cleaning lady made a few months prior about her husband having a big old bike in
their barn that she would love to get rid of. Enough story...in August I pick
up a 72 AMBO from a dirt floor garage for FREE that has had the left valve
cover off for over 15 years, engine half full of water and a beautiful patina
of rust on every possible part that can! Nope, haven't ridden my loop yet, but
am having a ball with it in the garage and, after reading all the other
stories, it sounds as if I am at the initial stages of a wonderful addiction!!!
