The unit you are referring to is probably for a flywheel magneto . They
are different from the Kettering type ignition used on Moto Guzzis
(loops). The unit you are talking about triggers at the peak voltage
developed by the rotating flywheel magnet.
We used a similar set up on our old Mc-9 Kart engines . It was called
"Maverick Spark " What we did was start the engine on the points and run
at low speed on the points . When the speed increased we would open the
point circuit and let the plug fire at the peak voltage. The peak
voltage firing point was set by shifting the flywheel with an offset
key. It gave a rudimentary timing advance at high speed .

OK, I stand corrected, thanks, Bob ----- Original Message ----- From: Christopher Mitchell To: Loopfram-@topica.com Sent: Sunday, May 25, 2003 12:48 PM Subject: Re: electronic ignitions again As someone who just burned a hole in a piston on my Triumph, I can tell you that's not true. My timing slipped, causing pre-ignition (spark comes when piston is still on the upstroke). Also made a mess of the combustion chamber. I guess it goes without saying that firing the spark at the right time is crucial. Any word from the guys who are trying out the electronic ignitions from Harpers? I was browsing through the latest Northern Tool and Equip. catalogue and came accress this: "ELECTRONIC IGNITION UNIT REPLACES POINTS AND CONDENSER. Starts small engines faster and easier! Fires spark plug 5 to 14 times with each impulse. Fits most 2- and 4-cycle, air-cooled engines. Maintenance-free. About the size of a quarter. Price: $13.99." I suppose that wouldn't work in my Guzzi, but what I can't figure out is what tells this thing when to fire. If it can be used in a variety of engines, how will it know what to do and when? How will it know when to increase rpm? The picture of it doesn't show anything that looks adjustable or variable. My son and I got a good soaking coming home from his hunter safety course today. It was mighty cloudy when I left home, but I couldn't resist taking the goose.
