Pete,
As I understand it there is a spacer in between the two bearings. As you
tighten the axle nut the two bearings tighten against this spacer (and
whatever shims are in there to vary the length). The proper distance between
the two bearings is when the distance is equal to the two races (plus just a
smidgen of play) set into the wheel. Actually a pretty neat design. If set
up right at the factory then you never have to worry about it loosening up.
When you have the bearings out give the races a good cleaning and a thorough
inspection. On my 70 Ambo project one of the races were cracked (don't know
why...likely on installation way back when).
By the way...the races should not spin in the wheel. They should be tight.
If they spin instead of the bearing then you will get a heat build up due to
friction. Best thing to do if it is loose is to add a dab of blue loctite.
You can always set up a simple rig to check the play in the bearings prior
to greasing. You really need the right combination of bolts and washers to
simulate it being on the frame. You will figure it out when you get looking
at it.
Hope this helps...Ian
p.s. you didn't answer my question about Virginia. I will assume that means
no :-)

Got my fingers crossed, right now all seems pretty good. Must be a good sign I am thinking of the loop again! I changed the needles and enrichener valves in the carbs. Ready for a test ride soon. I'll do the bearings, I was always intrigued by the bearing design. It appears that the inner and outer races are locked up when you loosen the axle nut. Someone told me that the axial force of tightnening the nut squeezes the bearing and that allows the inner race to rotate. Do I have it right?? All the BEst Pete still in PA ( barely) |
