Subject: Locating dowel on front timing bearing

Hey all...need a little advice.
On the front main bearing....there is a dowel that extends downward into the
case. The bearing I received has the dowel tight in the upper oil hole of
the bearing. I need to drive that out and install it facing downwards and
extending into the case...right?
Same with the main rear bearing?
What was the purpose of these dowels?

p.s. when installing the two bearings into the case would it serve any
advantage to use a little anti seize between the surfaces?
