Ian,
That dowel would have to come out. Be sure to drive it from the inside out.
There is a shoulder on it and anouther one in the flange. These keep the
bearing from spining as far as I can figure, also for lubrication. Pay
attention and be careful. One engine I'm working on now had the dowel pin
sheared off. That metal had to go somewhere and it went through the main
bearing also get trapped between the O.D. of the bearing and the I.D. of the
flange. This was probably due to anouther clogged oil hole somewhere.
Haven't installed one yet but I would think about some locktite when
installing the dowel again. Any opinions on that?
This was on the RR Main. The FT should be the same I would think.
The shoulder(s) will tell you when to stop upon installation.

Kev

Subject: Locating dowel on front timing bearing

Hey all...need a little advice.

On the front main bearing....there is a dowel that extends downward into the
case. The bearing I received has the dowel tight in the upper oil hole of
the bearing. I need to drive that out and install it facing downwards and
extending into the case...right?

Same with the main rear bearing?

What was the purpose of these dowels?

Thanks...Ian

p.s. when installing the two bearings into the case would it serve any
advantage to use a little anti seize between the surfaces?
