Don:
I just ran out to the garage and checked the rear wheel play on my
Ambo, it's about 3". This is with driveline components that are used
but what I consider useable. Some play is normal, I've never heard that
this is a gauge for wear, although I may stand to be corrected. If you
got excessive vibration at the pegs your U-joint or carrier bearing may
be suspect.
I've never done this, but I imagine that if you put the bike on the
stand, start it , put it in gear and have someone throttle it up gently
while you poke around with a big screwdriver between the suspect area
and your ear (shadetree stethoscope) it may uncover something. Be
prepared to hear lots of stuff you've never heard before.
You can kinda look at your U-joint by slipping off the rubber boot,
but a prudent thing to do is to remove the swingarm and inspect, clean,
and lube the entire rear drive. It's not really all that difficult, and
offers the unique opportunity to bond with your bike.

The bike has vibration in the foot pegs.I think it is more than possibly some normal vibration.A friend said to check rear wheel play with the bike on its centerstand and in gear.I rocked the wheel back and forth and found about 4 inches of play :-(.I have never had any of the driveline apart. The PO replaced the u-joints about 5 years ago with used parts. It sounds like another expensive problem. Iam having a major learning experience with my first Guzzi.I guess Iam the unfortunate buyer who will have to do some major repairs.I love the motorcycle and plan to get it fixed up so I can enjoy riding it.What else in the driveline should I pay attention too for problems?
