How I found my bad U joint was to rotate the wheel slowly on the center
stand and feel for any kind of binding.
Also....I feel the area around the u joint after riding. It should not be
hot....if so there is friction.

This is with driveline components that are used but what I consider useable. Some play is normal, I've never heard that this is a gauge for wear, although I may stand to be corrected. If you got excessive vibration at the pegs your U-joint or carrier bearing may be suspect. I've never done this, but I imagine that if you put the bike on the stand, start it , put it in gear and have someone throttle it up gently while you poke around with a big screwdriver between the suspect area and your ear (shadetree stethoscope) it may uncover something. Be prepared to hear lots of stuff you've never heard before. You can kinda look at your U-joint by slipping off the rubber boot, but a prudent thing to do is to remove the swingarm and inspect, clean, and lube the entire rear drive. It's not really all that difficult, and offers the unique opportunity to bond with your bike. John Prusnek
