BTW, the way I found the point of the largest gap was by holding the
feeler guage against the valve/rocker arm and rotated the engine around
TDC until I got a gap/maximum gap, then used that point for adjustment
to spec.

I did this and when the piston was at it's highest point (closest to the spark plus) the rocker arms would shift from one coming down to the other coming up, but would require me to tweak the stroke a bit to get the gap to open up so I could check and adjust the gap. For some reason, the left side took more work to make this happen as the intake valve stayed tight until I backed out the piston a bit from TDC. I'm waiting for a new cap and rotor to arrive, hoping it will be here today, and am running out to get new plugs. I have installed a new condenser, new wires, and new points - gapped them w/o a problem. I guess I'll get it all back together and see how she runs. If too noisy, I'll shut down and try again.
