Keith, I think what Greg is saying is that if it is tranny oil, then it's
leaking along the clutch pushrod past the little rubber seals on that rod.
These can be cone shaped or an oring seal. The cones are the typical thing
you find one the rod. MI(Moto International, Seattle, WA)came up with a
replacement (update) for this. The pushrod is behind in with the
throwoutbearing and runs all the way through the trans to pop out the other
side and push on the clutch when you pull in your clutch. You might be able
to pull it out (with a magnet) after removing the clutch arm the the cable
is attached to.

Kev

PS. dont block that hole in the neutral switch, It acts as a vent for the
trans. there's an update on this as well, haven't done it myself, not yet
at least, been planning on it. It involves drilling and tapping a larger
hole in the sensor, installing a nipple for a hose, installing the hose, and
routing it up.

Maybe someone else can fill in the blanks for you(us).

Greg,

Will check those breather connections, I had just installed a new hose
as one split while driving, what a mess! What confuses me is how oil
would get into the bell housing as Ken Pitts said,

"Also make sure the rubber tubing connecting the engine to the breather
box are a tight fit around the metal pipes. Oil leaking were the rubber
meets the metal pipes will run down the metal tube into the bell
housing & drip out the bottom appearing to be a rear main leak."

Will have to look closer at that to understand how the oil will run down
the metal tube into the bell housing.

As for, "sniff it to make sure it's not tranny lube. If it is, try to
fix that with MI's o-ring fix." What exactly is "MI" and what am I
fixing here? Internal fix or drain plug fix? Drain plug is fine/dry,
perhaps something is leaking internally. I have noticed some oil under
the rear trans casing, actually just in front of it on that cylinder
shaped cross member that is part of the casting (hard to describe) and
figured it was probably the drip point for the neutral switch leak - Oh,
BTW, I do get some oil leaking out of the neutral switch which I have
heard this is common, I gather I will have to get some goop stuff to
stop it as I have heard the gaskets are NLA? That oil seems much darker
in color than the oil leaking out up front.

Last question, where can I buy that "3M oil absorbent batting (it's
really the same as Thinsulate)", I had asked the local Auto parts store
and they looked at me like I had 3 heads.

Thanx!!

If nothing works, do like I did and get some of that 3M oil absorbent
batting (it's really the same as Thinsulate) and make a maxi-pad for ol'

Patience, as I did for my Maude.

Duct tape the maxi in place over the drip hole and forget about it till
the maxi is full, at which time you just replace it.

This has been my solution for the last 3 years and 70,000 miles. No
drips, no mess, and no one but me and Maude knew about it, until now.

Good luck!

 Good Morning Fellow Loopers,

I am keeping an eye on the "oozing of character" on Patience, my 71
Ambo. I am still somewhat conecerned, but wanted to get a read from
y'all. How much is too much oil to be dripping to the ground? My guess
is she seems to drop about 3-5 drops per day of oil while she is sitting
in the garage as I have a piece of cardboard under her and by the end of
the day, the oil spot spreads out to about the size of a quarter to 1/2
dollar coin size. My concern is why the oil continues to be leaking out
and through the mating surface of the engine/tranny casting - how much
oil is actually sitting in there that she continues to drip oil? I
guess it can't be that bad as oil is not leaking out of that little
hole, so the oil isn't up to that level. Other concern is how bad she
leaks while I ride, will oil pressure increase the leak? It seems it
does as she is wet underneath after a ride, not terrible, but more than
when she sits, perhaps the oil is just getting blown about. My concern
with leaking while I ride is for the health of the clutch and the health
of me - hate that the oil is dropping in front of the rear tire, doesn't
make for sure footed traction!!

Thoughts anyone? Similar situtations? Time to Ride or time to
disassemble? Cam and I are planning on going to the National, perhaps
one of our loopframe experts can tear her down, fix her, and re-assemble
while we are there.
