Well, they were certainly round in cross section when the factory put them
in! What you are looking at is total forced deformation and loss of elastic
memory after years of pressure and heat and submersion in an oil bath. Bet
you a dollar they are also hard as a rock and with small cracks. That's
exactly why they leak after years.
I would NOT use hardware store o-rings unless you want to do this job twice.
Get them from your Guzzi parts supplier or from a good bearing house so you
know they will tolerate oil and heat properly.
