Factory floorboards or "Police floorboards" by default come with 1 down (3
or 4 up), that was a requirement by the police forces, so there is no need
to
modify them.

Modifying the shift linkage in this way seems a good idea to me on bikes
with the factory footboards as it moves the operating lever much closer

to

the support bushing, as well as making the shit pattern the now

universal

one down, four/three up. Don't know about footpeg models.

I did this on my Cali some years ago & it works fine. I probably have a
drawing of the modified shaft somewhere too, if anyone wants to see it.

Actually, you would have to modify the shaft which the shift lever is
connected to. It is easy enough to flip the actuator arm on the back

of

the trans around the other way, but then the corresponding lever on

the

pivot shaft will be off by about 5 inches. The only way that I can

think

of getting it to work would be to move the position of the arm (which

is

welded to the shaft) about 5 inches to the left in order to get it to
line up with the new location of the actuator. This means that you

would

either have to grind off the weld on the existing arm and move it

over,

or better yet, fabricate a new arm and weld it in the new position.

Here is a link to a photo of the shift linkage on my Ambo, which is

set

up with the footboards and consequently the "reverse" shift pattern.
