Yeah,
The lubrication in the "bendix" gear part of the starter has gone south
on you. Which is why it doesn't allow the starter to disengage so the
engine spins the starter and it makes a hellaceous noise. My guess. If
you can disassemble the starter, and the commutator looks good, you can
probably clean and regrease things and it will be OK.
