Hi Guys,
Want to share an experience from this past weekend and chalk up another
example of how this list has been valuable to me.
Never having had a Loop before I had no reference point to its "normal"
characteristics.
The 71 I bought started and ran OK, but I have always had this very slow
cranking speed. I thought it was normal . the starter would "bog" when
starting at hot engine temp. It just barely turned over. It didn't seem
right.
I tried , a fresh garden tractor battery, then a larger cranking capacity
battery, Cleaned all terminals, All helped but still I have the bog.
Then from reading recent posts and the Guzzi Tips booklet, I started zeroing
in on the starter.
I took the plunge this weekend ( I suffer from "electro-phobia") .
I usually avoid electrical repairs but, after reading the list and hearing
how others do it yourself, I pulled the starter and popped the brush
assembly out and sprayed contact cleaner on and shined up the armature with
emery.
Lubed the bushings and the problem is solved.!
It cranks like a "normal" bike.
I'm writing this out in case it helps anyone else with a similar problem.
Thanks everyone for exchanging tech info. I am sorry I couldn't make the
WNY rally and meet some of the clan.
When are MD and VA rallys?
Pete
