Can disagree with ya there :-)
When I restored my 70 Ambo I did just that. That is to leave the side panels
as they were. They aren't perfect but good enough....however I would have
prefered new....just looks better but I wasn't prepared to spend the extra
$400 and have to wait the extra time.
When I had the tank painted I asked my painter about eventually painting the
chrome panels if they got to look bad. He said no problem.....he would mask
the area off and paint them up. I think a nice silver colour (or grey)
would look nice.
Whatever is done the main idea is to keep these puppies on the road. I love
the look of an old one as much as I do a perfectly restored one.

IMO, The chrome panels serve no purpose other than eliminate a wear spot
for paint and add a wear spot for chrome. I would also say that unless you
want to pay a real professional to restore it to its original glory I say
leave it with the well worn patina. That said, there is nothing wrong with a
little custom (right Dave?). I always thought that red with silver panels
(instead of chrome), pinstripes and emblems would look great. Or Italian
green with cream panels and pinstripes. I have seen yellow with black panels
and pinstripes that looked kind of tasty. But opinions are just like
assholes
they say, Everyone has one.
