John,

Yup...chroming aint cheap. For a while Dave Otis was talking about =
having some very thin stainless panels made that would adhere to the old =
chrome patch. A pretty cool thought but I don't know what progress he =
has made on this.

Chrome patch was originally done so the knee wouldn't wear out the =
paint.=20

One thought is to get the painter to paint the chome patch a silver. =
Some pretty nice paints out there that would give the illusion of =
chrome. An inexpensive way to go and I think that the patch gives the =
tank a nicer look that solid.

Regards...Ian

Fellow loopers, (kinda sounds like a disease)
I have decided that my 28 year old, 149,000 mile eldo is going to =
need a good clean up. I would really like to repaint it and re-chrome =
the tank panels but I know that it will be an impossibility from a =
affordability standpoint. To me the chrome tank panels are one of the =
most defining features on a loopframe, but the prices that I have been =
quoted are waaaaaaaay out of my price range so I must decide to paint =
the tank and fenders a solid color or leave them as is, which is a bit =
repugnant after seeing some beautifully restored loopframe bikes. My =
questions are, what are the purposes, other than looks, for the chromed =
tank panels? And, should one paint the tank a solid color or not, and if =
not, then why? The last option is, should I leave it be and allow it's =
weathered look to be considered character?
