Not a nice sight to see gas running over the newly painted tank. I found a source of gas resistant rubber material (1/8" thick) and took the cap apart. Yeah the nut on top was peened...I just backed the nut off with a socket.....seems to be soft metal. Pretty easy to figure it all out once you get everything apart Once everything was apart I cut out a new piece of gasket using the old one as a template.....put everything back together and used Loctite on the nut. Did two of them......so far so good.
