A Mechanic told me this method.
for Idle:
use a drill bit or something close to the correct diameter and place in he
carb body between the slide and the bottom of the carb throat. adjust
the slide using the screws on each side. These are the screws with the
springs to hold them in place. Move the drill bit or whatever other gage
you find back and forth between both carbs. adjust the slides so that the
same opening exists on both sides.

Once you start the bike and after warming, you can adjust the idle speed by
moving the screw on each side in equal amounts.
I found on my bike , the left side did not open as much as the right side,
so it was running mainly on the right. After this adjustment, it was better.

For the loaded setting ( when you are off idle):
get a bigger drill or other hard gage and then open throttle and then
fix it so it does not move. set it to the gage on one side and then check
the other. Make adjustments by adjusting the throttle cable length.
There is an adjusting nut on top of each carb.

Both slides should be open the same amount now.

remove the gage .

Again, I am sure a vacuum gage is the best way to go but until I get around
to tapping a hole into each manifold, this will have to do. So far, the
idle and running seem very balanced.

Good luck
If you need clarification, email me off list and I'll be glad to help
Pete

Yeah, what would the mechanical method consist of? Thanks.

Luap.
My 71 ran that way too when I got it. I know the best way to synch the
carb is with a venturi to balance the flow, but I used a mechanical
method
that worked well. It seems to run much more evenly now. The right
plug
still burns cleaner than the left but the exhaust heat and pressure
coming
out of the tailpipe are fairly close now.

I have no crossover pipe between the mufflers.

I don't think you can synch the carbs by ear.
I can describe the mechanical synch method for you if you want.

Ok folks, help me if you can and dont mind. I went to my uncles this
week

and helped get his 73 eldo back to "original". The bike runs good,
but

the left bank is blowing colder exhaust than the right one. I
adjusted

the carbs best I could by ear and like I say the bike seems to be
running

fine and he says it has never run that good, but what could be the
miss?

Could it be a burnt valve? Carbs need more work? Im at the end of my
wits. I know the left bank is firing and I got the idle where I think
it

 should be. Any suggestions?

Luap
